The Never-ending Lure of Spanish Gold Coins

One cannot mention Spanish Gold coins without envisioning pirates, hurricanes, and shipwrecks in the Caribbean. As a matter of fact, the distinction of Florida and the Caribbean as being the location of more buried treasure than anywhere in the world has been propagated and accepted since the 1500s.

Gold collectors and investors are well aware that over $160 million in gold and silver lies buried in the tropical waters off Florida and the Caribbean. Because of its rich history of pirates, wars, hurricanes, and the presence of Spanish galleons carrying gold (also known as Spanish Escudo) and silver from the New World to the Old World, treasure hunters seeking doubloons and pieces of eight have made Florida and Caribbean waters their home away from home for decades.

Spanish gold coins are exquisite in their design and detail and some are available to collectors and investors in a wide range of denominations, sizes, and gold content. Spanish gold coins minted in 1877 and emblazoned with the right facing bust of King Alfonso XIII are a favorite.

The more popular denominations of gold pieces available to collectors today were struck between the years 1889 and 1890, though gold coins minted between 1588 and 1874 are much sought after. Ranging in gold content between 0.8671 and 0.0951, many of the more common denominations of Pesetas are available at reasonable prices for many collectors.

A feather in the cap of any collector, pre-1850 Spanish coins, and most especially those minted before 1800, are sought after like no other coins in the history of mankind. The coast of Florida as well as the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean have brought gold coins buried for hundreds of years to the light of day, to be enjoyed, admired, and coveted, by most coin collectors around the world.

In March [1892] Stanford and California had played the first college football game on the Pacific Coast in San Francisco… The pregame activities included a noisy parade down streets bedecked with school colors. Tickets sold so fast that the Stanford student manager, future president Herbert Hoover, and his California counterpart, could not keep count of the gold and silver coins. When they finally totaled up the proceeds, they found that the revenues amounted to $30,000–a fair haul for a game that had to be temporarily postponed because no one had thought to bring a ball! –from College Football: History, Spectacle, Controversy, Chapter ThreeIn this comprehensive history of America’s popular pastime, John Sayle Watterson shows how college football in more than one hundred years has evolved from a simple game played by college students into a lucrative, semiprofessional enterprise. With a historian’s grasp of the context and a novelist’s eye for the telling detail, Watterson presents a compelling portrait rich in anecdotes, colorful personalities, and troubling patterns. He tells how the infamous Yale-Princeton fiasco of 1881, in which Yale forced a 0-0 tie in a championship game by retaining possession of the ball for the entire game, eventually led to the first-down rule that would begin to transform Americanized rugby into American football. He describes the kicks and punches, gouged eyes, broken collarbones, and flagrant rule violations that nearly led to the sport’s demise (including such excesses as a Yale player who wore a uniform soaked in blood from a slaughterhouse). And he explains the reforms of 1910, which gave official approval to a radical new tactictraditionalists were sure would doom the game as they knew it–the forward pass.As college football grew in the booming economy of the 1920s, Watterson explains, the flow of cash added fuel to an already explosive mix. Coaches like Knute Rockne became celebrities in their own right, with hig

Fatal Treasure: Greed and Death, Emeralds and Gold, and the Obsessive Search for the Legendary Ghost Galleon Atocha

$26.95

A gripping modern story of treasure, tragedy, and tenacity, in the tradition of Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea In 1622, the Spanish galleon Atocha sank in a hurricane off the coast of Florida. On board were more than forty tons of treasure–gold and silver ingots, coins, emeralds, and jewelry, worth billions today. In 1969, Mel Fisher set out to find it. In this riveting narrative, reporter Jedwin Smith brings to life this decades-long quest. Since Mel’s death in 1998, the Fisher family has continued this epic treasure hunt, which has resulted in astounding recoveries (treasure from part of the Atocha as well as from its sister ship, the Margarita), complex legal battles, including deaths, drug addiction, and madness. Smith first encountered Mel Fisher in 1985, and has been reporting on–and participating in–the Atocha treasure hunt ever since. Writing with you-are-there immediacy, he captures like no other writer the romance of big-time treasure hunting as well as its sometimes horrible costs, taking us from astonishing discoveries of sunken gold and larger-than-life escapades in colorful Key West to foundering boats, dangerous dives, and personal loss. Written with the cooperation of the Fisher family and exclusive access to divers on the recovery team, this is the authoritative account of the most celebrated treasure hunt of our time–and a surefire bestseller.

The Shell Money of the Slave Trade

The Shell Money of the Slave Trade

$42

This study examines the role of cowrie-shell money in West African trade, particularly the slave trade. The shells were carried from the Maldives to the Mediterranean by Arab traders for further transport across the Sahara, and to Europe by competing Portuguese, Dutch, English and French traders for onward transport to the West African coast. In Africa they served to purchase the slaves exported to the New World, as well as other less sinister exports. Over a large part of West Africa they became the regular market currency, but were severely devalued by the importation of thousands of tons of the cheaper Zanzibar cowries. Colonial governments disliked cowries because of the inflation and encouraged their replacement by low-value coins. They disappeared almost totally, to re-appear during the depression of the 1930s, and have been found occasionally in the markets of remote frontier districts, avoiding exchange and currency control problems.
