Banking In Canada $23.6 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Royal Canadian Mint, Routing Transit Number, Interac, Big Five, Tax-Free Savings Account, Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, Early Canadian Banking System, White Label Abms in Canada, Email Money Transfer, Guaranteed Investment Certificate, Large Value Transfer System, Canadian Depository for Securities, Canadian Payments Association, Ontario Savings Bonds, Canada Bank Act, Canadian Investor Protection Fund, Canadian Bankers Association, Saskatchewan Savings Bond, Complaint Handling Process, Alberta Regional Network, Equifax Canada. Excerpt: The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM, French: Monnaie royale canadienne) produces all of Canada’s circulation coins, and manufactures circulation coins on behalf of other nations. The mint also designs and manufactures: collector coins; gold, silver, palladium, and platinum (19891999) bullion coins; customized medals, tokens, trade dollar watches, and, for a brief time, high end jewellery featuring coin designs. It further offers gold and silver refinery and assay services. The RCM is a Crown corporation that operates under the legislative basis of the Royal Canadian Mint Act. All monies in Canada are technically issued with the authority of the Canadian monarch; however, all operations are overseen by the President and CEO, or Master of the Mint, who is the senior executive officer of the organization, reporting to a Board of Directors appointed by the Minister of Public Works and Government Services. The RCM has been at the forefront of currency innovation. Among the mint’s technical innovations are its plating process, which consists of a multi-ply technology that allows electromagnetic signatures to be embedded in the coins, assuring readability in the coin-processing industries. Even if the standard of payments and prices may now in practice be gold, as regards both government and private debts, it is important to know how permanent this situation is. For simplicity, the matter of government bonds will be discussed first. How did the act of March 14, 1900, affect the “coin” provision in which national obligations are payable? The contention which arose soon after the Civil War, that the debt of the United States was payable in paper, was settled in fact by the actual refunding of the whole debt under the act of July 14, 1870, which provided that the bonds issued under this law should be “redeemable in coin of the present standard value.” Obviously this phrase referred to the standard coin existing before the act of 1878, and which then included silver dollars (of 371J grains pure silver) as well as gold dollars. Of course, silver dollars were worth more than gold dollars in 1870; and, as we all know, both gold and silver coins had been driven from circulation by the depreciated United States notes; but such facts are not to the point. Coin, in our law in 1870, included the silver dollar, whether it was in circulation or not. Hence all the bonds refunded under the act of 1870 were payable at the discretion of the Treasury either in silver or gold dollars. The act of February 12, 1873 (“the crime of 1873″), did not abolish the legal tender value of any of the few silver dollars which might then have been in existence. It simply omitted to provide for the future coinage of silver dollars (sec. 15 and 17); and added (sec. 14): That the gold coins of the United States shall be a one- dollar piece, which at the standard weight of twenty-five and |

Excerpt: Reverse of a 1 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the official bullion gold coin of Canada and is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint . The brainchild of Walter Ott, it is one of the purest gold coins of regular issue in the world, with a gold content of .9999 millesimal fineness (24 carats ), with some special issues .99999 fine. That is, it contains virtually no base metals at all only gold exclusively from gold mines in Canada. The coin was first introduced in 1979. At that time, the only available bullion coin was the Krugerrand , which was not widely available because of an economic boycott of apartheid -era South Africa . Coins minted between 1979 and 1981 have gold content of .999. The coin is offered in 20 oz , 10 oz, 4 oz, 2 oz, and 1 oz denominations and is guaranteed to contain the stated amount (in troy ounces ) of .9999 fine gold ( 24 carat ). The coins have legal tender status in Canada for the face values of these coins ( $1, $5, $10, $20 and $50) which is subject to the Canadian Currency Act in association with the Royal Canadian Mint Act. Although categorized under non-circulating bullion coins in the latter Act, these coins are still under the former Act, legal tender. The 20, 10, 4, and 2 troy ounce coins are identical in design to the one troy ounce coin except for the markings on the obverse and reverse sides that indicate the weight and face value of the coin. Counterfeit Money: Manchester Council Election, 1979 $9.91 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Counterfeit money is currency that is produced without the legal sanction of the state or government to resemble some official form of currency closely enough that it may be confused for genuine currency. Producing or using counterfeit money is a form of fraud. Roman coins were struck using a minting process, not cast, so these coin molds were created for forgery.Counterfeiting is probably as old as money itself. Before the introduction of paper money, the most prevalent method of counterfeiting involved mixing base metals with pure gold or silver. A form of counterfeiting is the production of documents by legitimate printers in response to fraudulent instructions. During World War II, the Nazis forged British pounds and American dollars. Today some of the finest counterfeit banknotes are called Superdollars because of their high quality, and likeness to the real US dollar. There has been a considerable amount of counterfeiting of Euro banknotes and coins since the launch of the currency in 2002. Some of the ill-effects that counterfeit money has on society are: a reduction in the value of real money; and increase in prices (inflation) due to more money getting circulated in the economy – an unauthorized artificial increase in the money supply; a decrease in the acceptability of paper money; and losses, because companies are not reimbursed for counterfeits. Traditionally, anti-counterfeiting measures involved including fine detail with raised intaglio printing on bills which allows non-experts to easily spot forgeries. On coins, milled or reeded (marked with parallel grooves) edges are used to show that none of the valuable metal has been scraped off. Example of counterfeited 50000 cruzeiros banknote.Counterfeiting is as old as money itself…. More: |

Currency $46.86 In economics, the term currency can refer either to a particular currency, for example the US dollar, or to the coins and banknotes of a particular currency, which comprise the physical aspects of a nation’s money supply. The other part of a nation’s money supply consists of money deposited in banks (sometimes called deposit money), ownership of which can be transferred by means of cheques or other forms of money transfer such as credit and debit cards. Deposit money and currency are money in the sense that both are acceptable as a means of exchange, but money need not necessarily be currency. Historically, money in the form of currency has predominated. Usually (gold or silver) coins of intrinsic value commensurate with the monetary unit (commodity money), have been the norm. By contrast, modern currency, as fiat money, is intrinsically worthless. The prevalence of one type of currency over another in commodity money systems has arisen, usually when a government designates through decrees, that only particular monetary units shall be accepted in payment for taxes. |
