One of the greatest soccer players is Edison Arantes do Nascimento. Born on October 23, 1940, he is best known by his nickname Pelé. He was named the Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee. In his native country Brazil, Pelé is recognized as a national treasure by the government, and recognized by the general public as a national hero. Over the course of his career, he has been hailed as “The King of Football,” or O Rei do Futebol, “The King Pelé,” O Rei Pelé; or simply “The King,” or O Rei. He is also included in the American National Soccer Hall of Fame. In addition to all his accomplishments and contributions to the game of football, he has also been designated by FIFA as a football ambassador of the world. Likewise, he dedicated his 1,000th goal to Brazilian children living in poverty, voicing his support of policies with the stated objective of improving the state of poverty-stricken areas.

The modern rules of the game were set down in England, after the formation of The Football Association. In 1863 it passed the Laws of the Game, and much of system elaborated therein is used in today’s soccer. The game is more popularly called football outside of the United States, and is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), or FIFA. The FIFA World Cup, held every four years, is considered as the most prestigious international football championship. This event, which may be the most widely viewed soccer game in the world, is said to draw an audience number twice that of the Summer Olympic Games.
