I found a 1901 halfpenny…?

While I was dismantling my piano today (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK3IrT8X00E) I found an old British halfpenny from 1901 with queen victoria on. Is it rare or a collectable? It’s in good condition, I’m cleaning it up as we type…
This may sound silly, and I absolutely understand why you might not want to clean an Old Coin… but how else are you able to tell the year if you don’t clean it?
