Coins in the Fountain

Three American women take a vacation to Rome (the site of the famed Trevi Fountain), where they find that the ancient city has more in store for them than they could have hoped for, as each goes on a romantic adventure of her own.

Three Coins in the Fountain

Three Coins in the Fountain

$12.73

Adapted by playwright John Patrick from a novel by famed globetrotter/filmmaker John H. Secondari, Three Coins in the Fountain offers the splendors of Rome in Technicolor, CinemaScope and Stereophonic Sounds. For all its lovely picture-postcard images, the film is at base a reworking of 20th Century-Fox’ favorite plotline: three pretty girls on the prowl for husbands. The three lovelies, who toss their coins in the Trevi fountain and wish for romance, include Dorothy McGuire, Jean Peters and Maggie McNamara. Before the film is over, secretary McGuire has wooed her boss, Clifton Webb, Peters has won the heart of a co-worker Italian translator Rossano Brazzi (despite being fired, in the process, for having an office romance); and McNamara finds happiness with prince Louis Jourdan. Three Coins in the Fountain won two Academy Awards: Best Color Cinematography (Milton Krasner), and Best Song (written by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen, and sung in the pre-credits sequence by an uncredited Frank Sinatra). The film was remade in 1965 as The Pleasure Seekers, and also served as the basis for a never-sold TV pilot starring Yvonne Craig, Cynthia Pepper and Joanna Moore. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A Princess Sydney Christmas: The Three Gold Coins

$8.49

A once-generous princess whose generous nature seems to have passed-on with the death of her kindly grandfather rediscovers the true meaning of Christmas in an animated tale of sharing and caring that the entire family will love. As a child, Princess Sydney would always share the three gold coins given to her by her grandfather with the less fortunate. As time wore on and Princess Sydney’s precious memories of her grandfather gradually faded, so too did the lessons he once taught to her about sharing her wealth and prosperity with the less fortunate. Nonetheless, those important life lessons still reside somewhere deep inside the consciousness of the embittered princess, and with a little help from her family and friends she might just rediscover the importance of giving – especially during the most magical time of the year. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Old Acquaintance

Old Acquaintance

$16.97

After the box office success of The Old Maid, Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins were reunited for this catty drama. Kitty Marlowe (Davis) is a well-respected author who returns to the small town of her birth, where she becomes reacquainted with her childhood friend Millie Drake (Hopkins). While Millie is happy as a wife and mother and loves her husband Preston (John Loder), she’s envious of Kitty’s success, and Kitty’s visit prompts Millie to sit down at the typewriter herself. Millie turns out a sexy potboiler that, with Kitty’s help, attracts the attention of a publisher. To the surprise of them both, Millie’s book is a runaway bestseller, and a decade later she’s one of the most successful authors in America, easily eclipsing Kitty’s more highbrow work. Preston finds himself growing disenchanted with Millie once success begins to go to her head, and he finds himself attracted to Kitty; while Kitty tries to dissuade Preston’s advances, a scorned Millie believes that her old friend has been trying to steal her husband away from her. Old Acquaintance was remade in 1981 as Rich and Famous. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This Old Cub

This Old Cub

$21.21

The baseball documentary THIS OLD CUB chronicles the life and times of beloved Chicago Cubs third baseman and broadcaster Ron Santo, and was directed by Santo’s son Jeff. Despite being diagnosed with a particularly dangerous form of diabetes as a child, Santo grew up to become one of the mainstays of the Cubs teams in the 1960s and early ’70s. After his playing career, he became a fan favorite broadcaster for the team. But during both his years on the field and afterwards, he struggled to keep his diabetes under control, until finally it required both of his legs to be amputated. Combining footage of Santo in his playing days, in the broadcast booth, and during his medical difficulties with interviews with his baseball contemporaries and celebrity Cubs fans, THIS OLD CUB is an in-depth portrait that goes beyond the myth making of typical sports documentaries.

In Old Caliente

In Old Caliente

$5.93

As in all his early westerns, Roy Rogers battles true Old West outlaws in the fine In Old Caliente. He is, as usual, Roy Rogers, but this time a trusted hand at the Olde California ranchero belonging to Don José (Frank Puglia). Unbeknownst to the Don, however, his half-breed foreman, Suguaro (Frank La Rue), is in league with Calkins (Harry Woods), the nasty Gringo behind a series of gold-shipment robberies. With Suguaro’s help, Calkins manages to pin the crimes on Roy and Gabby (George Gabby Hayes) and the Don has them imprisoned. But Rita (Katherine DeMille), Don José’s Eastern-bred daughter, believes them to be innocent and secures their release. The ensuing chase leads straight to the Pacific Ocean and the evil Suguaro is killed in the surf. Roy Rogers performs Sundown on the Range, by Fred Rose, The Moon, She Will be Shining Tonight and, in a duet with George Gabby Hayes, We’re Not Coming Out Tonight, the latter two penned by Walter Samuels. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi

Old Gringo

Old Gringo

$12.7

In this historical drama based on Carlos Fuentes’ novel, Harriet Winslow (Jane Fonda) is a naive woman who, hoping to broaden her horizons, accepts a job as a governess in Mexico in 1913. However, Harriet unknowingly finds herself thrown into the middle of the Mexican revolution, where she attracts the attentions of two very different men: an elderly American gentleman (Gregory Peck) who has come to Mexico to die, and Tomas Arroyo (Jimmy Smits), a general with Pancho Villa’s army of rebels who is fighting for the freedom of his people. The American’s attraction to Harriet is more intellectual (though he unmistakably finds her attractive), while Arroyo holds a greater romantic allure to Harriet, who is still a stranger to the ways of love. In time, she gains a new sense of freedom and self-knowledge in Mexico, but while the victories of Villa’s forces bring out an unseemly arrogance in Arroyo, Harriet makes a surprising discovery about the Old Gringo — that he is in fact the fabled author Ambrose Bierce, who vanished years before. Old Gringo was the first American film for director Luis Puenzo, and the next-to-last for star Jane Fonda. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In Old Chicago

In Old Chicago

$12.73

In Old Chicago was 20th Century-Fox’s spin on MGM’s San Francisco–a personal saga played out against the backdrop of a famous 19th Century disaster. Alice Brady plays Mrs. O’Leary, a widow who brings her two young boys to the sleepy village of Chicago. As the city grows in prominence and prestige, so do the boys: One son (Tyrone Power) becomes a rascal who dreams of creating his own entertainment empire, while the other son (Don Ameche) matures into an honest, straight-laced lawyer. Both boys woo a beautiful singer (Alice Faye), who favors the more reckless of the two. As the headstrong son gains control of the more disreputable forms of Chicago entertainment, the serious son becomes the city’s Mayor. The requisite rivalry between the two reaches a fever pitch just before their mother’s cow knocks over a lantern and sets off the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The O’Leary boys unite in trying to fight the conflagration and rescue the populace; the mayor dies, and the wastrel son vows to mend his ways and help build a new Chicago. In Old Chicago is climaxed spectacularly by the famous fire, a masterwork of special effects courtesy of 20th Century-Fox’s Fred Sersen. The film, which originally ran 115 minutes, is currently available only in its shorter (and better paced) reissue version. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Old Enough

Old Enough

$16.96

Director and writer Marissa Silver debuted with this captivating film on the friendship of two young girls from opposite sides of the economic tracks but same side of town. Twelve-year-old Lonnie Sloan (Sarah Boyd) is a well-to-do New York rich kid and Karen Bruckner (Rainbow Harvest) is the more ordinary, impoverished New York kid. They happen to meet one day on the street in their neighborhood and hit it off just because each is fascinated with unknown quantities. As they learn that they were taught to perceive and react to the world differently, their relationship becomes one of unfolding adventure — even for the grown-up viewers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi Guide

Old Joy

Old Joy

$25.46

Old Joy is writer/director Kelly Reichardt’s long-awaited follow-up to her revered but underseen 1994 feature debut, River of Grass. (She directed a couple of shorts in the interim, including Ode, a Super-8 film inspired by the song Ode to Bill.) Daniel London and cult folksinger Will Oldham star in the film as two old friends who go on a camping trip to a hot springs in the Cascade mountain range of Oregon. London’s Mark is the responsible one with the modest house, the wife (who resents his gallivanting off), the dog (who comes along), and the baby on the way. He listens to Air America, and makes all the right liberal noises. Oldham’s Kurt is the free-spirit type with the untamed facial hair and the junker car that looks more lived-in than vehicular. Kurt suggests the trip, and they take Mark’s car. Kurt has the directions to the place, and they get lost (I think we’re somewhere…in the area) and spend the night at a garbage-strewn campsite, where they discuss their lives, and Kurt laments the apparent dissolution of their friendship. In the morning, they have breakfast in a diner, and Mark apologizes to Tanya (Tanya Smith) over the phone, explaining that he’ll be home later than expected. In the daylight, they find the hot springs, and spend the afternoon quietly unwinding. Reichardt co-wrote Old Joy with Jonathan Raymond, adapting his short story, which was originally written as a collaboration with photographer Justine Kurland. It was shot (on Super-16) by Peter Sillen and features a soundtrack by Yo La Tengo. The film was selected by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art for inclusion in the 2006 edition of New Directors/New Films. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

The Old Testament

The Old Testament

$5.93

This adventure-themed Biblical epic from director Gianfranco Parolini (with a misleading title – it only covers a small portion of the Old Testament) unfurls a century and a half prior to the birth of Christ. It finds the Jews ruled by the oppressive and tyrannical Syrians. The king of Damascus, Antiochus, shuttles governor Apollonius off to Jerusalem and demands the he instigate order among the resident Jews. Unfortunately, Apollonius’s efforts backfire when he ill-advisedly places a statue of the pagan god Jove in the holy temple, drawing ire from nearly everyone; warrior Judas Maccabeus leads an uprising to protest this. After Judas is killed, he’s promptly replaced by his less bellicose brother Simon, who then vows to lead the rebellion, taking on Apollonius and the other Syrians in his late sibling’s stead. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Old School

Old School

$9.34

Three men relive their carefree college years by killing off as many brain cells as possible in this over-the-top comedy. Mitch (Luke Wilson) returns home from a less-than-pleasant business trip one evening to discover his wife, Heidi (Juliette Lewis), involved in a ménage à trois with two blindfolded strangers. Feeling less than welcome at home after this, Mitch rents a house near the campus of a nearby college; two of Mitch’s old college buddies, Beanie (Vince Vaughn) and Frank (Will Ferrell), stop by to cheer him up. They soon become regular guests at Mitch’s place, despite the fact that Frank only recently wed Marissa (Perrey Reeves), while Beanie and his wife, Lara (Leah Remini), are busy with two kids. Beanie decides to throw a housewarming party for Mitch, and since Beanie sells audio equipment for a living, he’s able to trick out the big bash with a massive PA system and an appearance by Snoop Dogg. Mitch soon finds he’s the not-entirely-willing proprietor of the school’s leading party spot, which raises the ire of Pritchard (Jeremy Piven), a dean at the college who was the target of Mitch, Frank, and Beanie’s abuse when they were all students. Pritchard arranges to have Mitch’s neighborhood zoned into a student housing district, but Beanie and Frank respond by forming a fraternity and making Mitch’s home their headquarters. Mitch, however, is not enthusiastic about the idea, especially as he’s trying to impress Nicole (Ellen Pompeo), a beautiful divorcee who is less than enchanted with Frank and Beanie’s party hearty lifestyle. Old School director Todd Phillips knows more than a bit about the seamy side of fraternity life as director of the infamous unreleased documentary Frat House. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

John Travolta and Robin Williams team up in the Walt Disney Company’s Old Dogs, a family comedy that pairs the two as close business partners whose lives are thrown into disarray when twin seven-year-olds are put into their care. Travolta’s wife, Kelly Preston, co-stars, along with the couple’s daughter, Ella, who makes her big-screen debut here. Wild Hogs helmer Walter Becker directs a script by Evolution scribes David Diamond and David Weissman, with producing duties going to Andrew Panay, Peter Abrams, and Robert Levy. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi Bambi is brimming with unforgettable sequences, notably the young deer’s attempts to negotiate an iced-over pond, and most especially the death of Bambi’s mother–and if this moment doesn’t move you to tears, you’re made of stone (many subsequent Disney films, including Lion King, have tried, most in vain, to match the horror and pathos of this one scene). The score in Bambi yielded no hits along the lines of Whistle While You Work, but the songs are adroitly integrated into the action. Bambi was the last of the classic early Disney features before the studio went into a decade-long doldrums of disjointed animated pastiches like Make Mine Music. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Warner Baxter, sporting a black mustache and a musical-comedy Mexican accent, stars as the Cisco Kid, the Robin Hood of the Old West created by O. Henry. Edmund Lowe co-stars as Cisco’s friendly enemy Sgt. Mickey Dunne, the role that was originally to have gone to Raoul Walsh. Both men are madly in love with dusky beauty Tonia Maria (Dorothy Burgess), and in fact Cisco is so far gone that he composes a song in the girl’s honor (actually, My Tonia, first heard during the opening credits, was written by Fox studio tunesmiths Lew Brown, B.G. DeSylva and Ray Henderson). Alas, Tonia ends up betraying Cisco to Sgt. Burke. But the crafty, cold-blooded Cisco arranges for Tonia to be killed in the trap set for him (this plot resolution is faithful to O. Henry’s original conception of the Cisco Kid, who wasn’t really meant to be a good guy). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi LADY FOR A NIGHT), whose beauty is equal only to her trickery. She soon betrays the Kid to the Sergeant, and Cisco turns ruthless in his quest for revenge, plotting to ensnare Tonia in a trap that was meant for him.

With its slight resemblance to Destry Rides Again (1939) — probably not entirely coincidental — this rousing Western from Republic Pictures remains a joy throughout. John Wayne plays Tom Craig, a mild-mannered druggist from Boston who opens a shop in wild and woolly Sacramento shortly before the Gold Rush. The town is owned by the Dawson brothers, Britt (Albert Dekker) and Joe (Dick Purcell), who poison Craig’s tonic when saloon hostess Lacey Miller (Binnie Barnes) takes too much of an interest in the handsome newcomer. Town drunk Whitey (Emmett Lynn) has one drink too many, and all of Sacramento is soon in a lynching mood. The news of gold in them thar hills saves the druggist in the nick of time, but his business is destroyed. While everyone is heading for the gold fields, Craig prepares to leave town with snobbish debutante Ellen Sanford (Helen Parrish), whom he intends to marry. News of typhoid fever among the prospectors changes his mind, however, and the man once referred to as a human hitchin’ post instead of a two-legged man, risks his own life to save the suffering populace. The Dawson brothers, meanwhile, plan to hijack the medical supplies and sell them to the highest bidder, but when Britt Dawson learns that Lacey is helping the sick and may be stricken with the disease herself, he has a change of heart and eventually confesses to spiking Craig’s medicine. Cast against type for most of the film, John Wayne fails to make his amiable druggist entirely believable but remains simply John Wayne throughout — which is as it should be. Binnie Barnes is rowdy and fun whether leading a chorus of California Joe by Johnny Marvin and Fred Rose, or jealously interrupting a tête-à-tête between Wayne and 19-year-old Helen Parrish. Usually cast as glacial other women in Hollywood films, the British-born Barnes had actually begun her professional career touring Europe and South Africa with bucolic American headliner Tex McLeod, which was as good a preparation as any to play In Old California’s saloon belle. Patsy Kelly, who shoots down her laundry with a Winchester, and Edgar Kennedy, as Wayne’s tooth-ache plagued sidekick, add to the general fun. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi

These Old Broads

These Old Broads

$12.71

Four of Tinseltown’s greatest glamour queens came together for this tartly comic made-for-TV movie which pokes gentle (and not so gentle) fun at their histories and reputations. Kate Westburn (Shirley MacLaine), Addie Holden (Joan Collins), and Piper Grayson (Debbie Reynolds) are three legendary Hollywood stars who in their heyday were known to audiences for their beauty, charm, and musical talent — and, within the movie industry, for their short tempers and industrial-strength egos. The three stars only worked together once, on a musical made in the early ’60s called Boy Crazy, but when the film becomes a cult sensation in a late-’90s re-release, Gavin (Nestor Carbonell), a network television executive desperate for a hit, gets the idea of staging a reunion special starring the three divas. However, there’s a hitch — the three women can barely stand each other, and while they share the same agent, Beryl Mason (Elizabeth Taylor), Beryl and Piper haven’t gotten along since Piper’s husband left her to marry Beryl. But Gavin is determined to make the project work, and hires Kate’s son Wesley (Jonathan Silverman) to work with Beryl to pull things together. Against all odds, the three stars agree to do the special, but while there’s no small amount of cat-fighting behind the scenes, in front of the camera the ladies discover time has not been kind to all of them. These Old Broads was written and executive-produced by Carrie Fisher and Elaine Pope; Fisher, of course, is the daughter of Debbie Reynolds, whose husband Eddie Fisher had an affair with Elizabeth Taylor (Fisher later married Taylor after he divorced Reynolds), and Fisher wrote a character based on her mother for the novel (and subsequent movie) Postcards From the Edge, which was played onscreen by Shirley MacLaine. No word on where Joan Collins fit into this formula. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this Carl Reiner-directed romantic comedy, Bette Midler stars as a movie star named Lilly, who has had a fairly successful career which is now on the downturn. Years after a terrible divorce, she meets up again with her ex-husband Dan (Dennis Farina) at the wedding of their daughter Molly (Paula Marshall). Molly is marrying a young and promising politician, Keith Marks (Jamie Denton), and the wedding is a formal affair. Lilly and Dan have each remarried, and each despise the other’s new spouse. Dan has taken up with the young bombshell who ruined the marriage, Rowena (Gail O’Grady). Lilly is wedded to their former marriage counselor, Alan (David Rasche), a psychobabble-spouting shrink. Lilly and Dan engage in a huge shouting match at the reception, and they are shooed outside, where their argument leads to a passionate reunion in a sports car. Impulsively, they run away together. Keith, seeking damage control to avert a possible political scandal, enlists Molly’s help, and she hires a papparazi photographer, Joey (Danny Nucci), who has spent several years stalking Lilly with his camera and selling candid photos to celebrity magazines. Molly and Joey find Molly’s parents at a hotel, but Lilly locks them in a room together so that she and Dan can have one old last romantic evening. Molly and Joey find themselves uncomfortably attracted to each other, leading to more romantic trouble. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

During the folk music revival which spanned the late 1950’s-70’s, legendary old-time artists were rediscovered and previously unheard exponents of this tradition were found and brought to perform at folk festivals. It was an exciting epoch which coupled ‘living legends’ like Clarence Ashley and Tommy Jarrell with younger incarnations of the old time spirit (New Lost City Ramblers, Red Clay Ramblers, etc.). This rare video collection presents some of the finest old time musicians playing in a variety of ways with banjo, fiddle, guitar and dulcimer. The musicians are seen playing solo as well as in string band settings.
