When we speak of assaying the precious metals it may be safely affirmed that we refer to a subject which in point of magnitude and general utility yields to no other that can be named; whether we contemplate it in its bearing upon the interests of individuals, or of nations, we are brought to the same conclusion, viz. that it is a subject of vast, of universal importance. Gold and silver being the most precious ofmetals, and forming, as they do, the standard of value all over the globe, it is obvious how great the necessity is that some unerring principles should be established whereby to detect the frauds which mankind unhappily practise upon each other. Such a check and protection, both to individuals and to nations, does the office of the Assayer afford by suggesting to the individual members of a community the impolicy of practising any deceit in the mixture of their metals, when such deceit can be easily detected; whilst on a more extended scale, and where the fatal effects of deceit and fraud would be coextensive with the mercantile and social transactions of the world, it presents an effectual barrier against one nation imposing upon another in the all-important article of its bullion. In the absence of any such check it is obvious that all confidence would be at an end, nothing could be bought or sold, and universal suspicion would ensue. The respect which we now feel for the coin of the realm would be changed for disgust; whilst the confidence we are able to repose in the bullion of Foreign Countries would speedily wither and decay; and thus mankind would lose the immense advantage of a metallic currency. The importance which the Legislature of our own highly favoured country attaches, and has for ages attached, to this subject may be seen from the safeguards b…

 A History of Money

A History of Money

$42.22

First published in hardback in 1994 and selected by the American Library Association as an Outstanding Academic Book, the revised and updated paperback edition includes the Barings crisis and the report by the Bank of England on Barings Bank; up-to-date information on the state of Japanese banking; changes in the financial scene in the United States; the UK housing market and the problem of negative equity. The paradox of why more coins than ever before are required in an increasingly cashless society is clearly explained, as is the role of the new Euro coin as the lowest common denominator in Europe’s controversial single-currency system. The final section provides evidence to suggest that for most of the world’s richer countries, the era of persistent inflation may well be at an end. This new edition is updated and takes account of important recent developments such as the independence of the Bank of England, the introduction of Euro notes and coins from January 1, 2002, and developments in electronic money.

Plan to increase the Currency by Issues of Notes on the Security of Land.—Dr. Smith’s Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.—His Views of the Sources of National Wealth, of the Nature of Metallic Money, of the Distribution of the Precious Metals throughout the World and in each State, and of the Measure of Prices.—Difficulties connected with these Views.—Dr. Smith’s Statement of the Causes of the Exportation of the Precious Metals.—His Views as to the Nature of a Loan of Money.—Mr. Hume’s argument that Money, while increasing, encourages the National Industry and lowers the Rate of Interest.—State of Trade and Banking on the Continent at this time.—Paper Money of the United States, of France, and of Russia.—Commercial Distresses of the Period.—Evidence as to the Connexion between these Distresses and the Issues of Bank-notes. Up to the end of the seventeenth century it might, perhaps, be assumed, without much error, that the commodities of the country were circu- D lated by means of coin only; but commodities can be circulated in a very different manner. The wholesale importers or producers of goods may supply their customers on credit, merely entering in their books the amount of the debts and the time of payment, their customers may dispose of these goods to other persons in the same manner, and so the transfer may go on until the goods come into the hands of the consumer. Excerpt: The History of the English penny dates from before the Anglo-Saxons had created a single Kingdom of England. It begins with the coin now called a Sceat, which was much the same size as the later pennies of Offa of Mercia and was proabably contemporaneously called a Penny. The history of Anglo-Saxon coinage spans more than five centuries, from the end of Roman rule in Britain in the fifth century, down to the death of Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. It can be divided into four basic phases: In the gold phase of the coinage, the currency consisted overwhelmingly of gold tremisses or thrymsas of c. 1.101.30g, though a few solidi exist, modelled on Roman coins. Thereafter the currency was more or less based on a single denomination: the silver penny. In the early 870s the first round halfpennies were produced under Alfred the Great and Ceolwulf II of Mercia; these were produced sporadically and in small quantity until Edgars reform of the 970s, after which it became common to cut whole pennies into halves and quarters, often at the time of production. The only known examples of larger silver denominations are two offering pieces produced in the reign of Alfred the Great weighing the equivalent of six regular pennies, which were made as alms-pieces, probably to be sent abroad. Although gold ceased to be the predominant form of currency in the seventh century, from the late eighth century onwards there was some use of fine gold coinage for special, high-value transactions. These gold pieces were often

Excerpt: The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM, French: Monnaie royale canadienne) produces all of Canada’s circulation coins, and manufactures circulation coins on behalf of other nations. The mint also designs and manufactures: collector coins; gold, silver, palladium, and platinum (19891999) bullion coins; customized medals, tokens, trade dollar watches, and, for a brief time, high end jewellery featuring coin designs. It further offers gold and silver refinery and assay services. The RCM is a Crown corporation that operates under the legislative basis of the Royal Canadian Mint Act. All monies in Canada are technically issued with the authority of the Canadian monarch; however, all operations are overseen by the President and CEO, or Master of the Mint, who is the senior executive officer of the organization, reporting to a Board of Directors appointed by the Minister of Public Works and Government Services. The RCM has been at the forefront of currency innovation. Among the mint’s technical innovations are its plating process, which consists of a multi-ply technology that allows electromagnetic signatures to be embedded in the coins, assuring readability in the coin-processing industries. Chapters: Bank of Indiana, Irwin Union Bank and Trust, Waterfield Bank, Old National Bank, Integra Bank, First Internet Bank of Indiana, 1st Source, Mainsource Bank. Excerpt: The state Bank of Indiana was a government chartered banking institution established in 1833 in response to the state’s shortage of capital caused by the closure of the Second Bank of the United States by the administration of President Andrew Jackson. The bank operated for twenty six years and allowed the state to finance its internal improvements, stabilized the state’s currency problems, and encouraged greater private economic growth. The bank closed in 1859. The profits were then split between the shareholders, allowing depositors to exchange their bank notes for federal notes, and the bank’s buildings and infrastructure were sold and reincorporated as the privately owned Second Bank of Indiana. The Indiana Territorial legislature had charted two banks in 1813. With no other established banks operating in Indiana, they were the first attempt by the government to bring banking and a standard currency to the young territory. The banks were granted twenty-year charters, but they quickly fell into financial difficulties following the Panic of 1819. By 1823 both banks had folded. Without any banks in the state, the government and the citizens came to rely on the use of notes issued from the Second Bank of the United States. In 1832 President Andrew Jackson vetoed a bill to extend the charter of the Second Bank of the United States and removed federal deposits, forcing it to cease most operations by 1833 due to a lack of reserve cash. The result caused a shortage of hard money (coin) at a critical time in Indiana’s development. The state had just begun a large series of internal … More:

The Award-winning poet Carl Phillips grapples with issues of authority, identity, and beauty in these sensual and deeply intelligent essays The coin of the realm is, classically, the currency that for any culture most holds value. In art, as in life, the poet Carl Phillips argues, that currency includes beauty, risk, and authority-values of meaning and complexity that all too often go disregarded. Together, these essays become an invaluable statement for the necessary-and necessarily difficult-work of the imagination and the will, even when, as Phillips states in his title essay, the last thing that most human beings seem capable of trusting naturally-instinctively-is themselves, their own judgment.

In art, as in life, the poet Carl Phillips argues, that currency includes beauty, risk, and authority-values of meaning and complexity that all too often go disregarded. Coinage in Roman Egypt: The Hoard Evidence

$29.38

In this volume, Erik Christiansen uses Alexandrian coin hoards to explore the use of money in Egypt from its conquest by Augustus in 30 BC to Diocletian’’s currency reform in AD 296. Although these finds, with their wide array of Graeco-Roman and Alexandrian reverses, have traditionally been classified as a part of Greek coinage, he demonstrates clearly that they belong to the Roman imperial coinage. The hoards also show that Roman Egypt enjoyed a widespread monetized economy, in addition to the credit system described in extant papyri. The relative abundance of such documents provides Christiansen with a good supplemental source of information for his conclusions. And since financial administration is known to have been quite uniform throughout the empire, this book provides a useful window on not only Rome’’s shifting economic fortunes but also monetary policy in other provinces, which did not leave behind the rich heritage of coins and documents that Egypt did.

Excerpt: The Thailand ten-baht coin is a currency unit of the Thai baht. Like every standard-issue coin in Thailand, its obverse features H.M. King Bhumipol Adulyadej, the Great. Its reverse features Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawora Mahavihara seen from the Chao Phraya River. Raised dots corresponding to Braille cell dot 1 and dots 2-4-5, which correspond to the number 10, are at the 12 o’clock position on the reverse of the standard-issue 10-baht coin. Braille enumeration does not appear on coins of other denominations, nor on ten-baht coins frequently issued as commemorative coins (for example, the 50th and 60th Anniversary of Accession to the Throne of King Bhumipol Adulyadej.) Ten-baht coin has been used as commemorative coin for many occations since 1971. As of August 2009, there are one silver, twenty-five nickel, twenty-one cupronickel and fifty-four bi-metallic face-valued ten-baht commemorative coin series. The bi-metallic ten-baht coin is very similar to the twoeuro coin, which first minted in 2002, in size, shape and weight and likewise consists of two different alloys. Vending machines that are not equipped with an up-to-date coin-checking system might therefore accept them as 2 coins. This similarity depends by the fact that both two coins are minted on the model of defunct Italian 500 lire, the world first modern bi-metallic coin. To mint its 10 baht coin in 1988, the Thai government had to be allowed by the Italian mint, which had an international copyright over bi-metallic minting. The 10 baht is a perfect copy of 500 lire even in its alloy, being made of acmonital for the ring and bronzital for the centre, but slightly larger (26 mm to 25.80 mm) and heavier (8.5 g to 6.8 g). In 2009, the new series of Thai baht coins is released in … More:
